Finding a destination that is fun for every member of the family can be a challenge. Recently we went on a family vacation that proved it’s out there – and probably not as far away as you think.

Enter: Blue Mountain Resort in Collingwood, Ontario.

This perfect summer destination is only a couple hours drive from the GTA and offers an experience normally reserved for far away destination travel.  Upon arriving, you are greeted by a gorgeous canvas of colours, from the green of the summer-mountain, to the colours of the village buildings – all against a backdrop of the beautiful blue sky.

While at the resort, we had the opportunity to try out several activities, restaurants and hotel amenities.

We stayed at the majestic Westin Trillium House, which is the largest hotel on site and looks over the entire resort.  It looks like a grand lakeside cottage as it sits across from the Mill Pond. Our spacious 2 bedroom suite included a full kitchen (including dishwasher), 2 bathrooms, a fireplace, a full living room/dining room and a balcony with a panoramic view of the mountain and the village. The Westin signature “Heavenly Beds” were exactly that and a wonderful way to enjoy a perfect sleep after a fun-filled day of activities. We wanted to move in permanently!

While we probably could have spent the entire vacation relaxing in the gorgeous room, Blue Mountain Resort has many activities for the family to enjoy.

Plunge! Aquatic Facility

Next to the Westin Pool, there is a fantastic family aquatic facility that the kids loved. Plunge! offers two pools, including one which is an indoor/outdoor pool, two hot tubs, a water slide, a swing rope and a water-play structure. For the swing rope, kids just need to pass a swim test (my 9 year old passed no problem, my 5 year old was definitely not old enough).

Cascades Putting Course

An 18 hole putting course at the base of the mountain was a fun way to enjoy some fun family time together. The most amazing part is looking at the photo posted showing the before & after that goes in to creating this course every summer. Amazing!

The Ridge Runner

This is the must-not-miss activity when visiting Blue Mountain.  We went on it 4 times! The Ridge Runner is a unique roller-coaster-esque ride that can be fun and thrilling, even for younger children. You control the speed!  My father and my 9 year old son went together and decided to see just how fast they could go (we were told it can get up to 25 miles per hour) whereas my 5 year old and I went for a slower ride and enjoyed the view.

Located in the village, Crock – A – Doodle is a great spot to take the kids for some art-time! They are able to pick out a piece of pottery and then sit down at one of the tables and paint as they would like. Their masterpieces are left to dry and you can either pick them up later or have them shipped to your home.

The Village at Blue Mountain offers some delicious places to eat! We enjoyed meals at The Pottery Restaurant, Tholos greek restaurant, Oliver & Bonacini Cafe & Grill and The Firehouse Pizza Co. We were pleased to find out that not only did they cater to families with kids of all ages while providing decadent food for the parents, they also catered to my son’s gluten allergy! We were pleased to find that The Pottery Restaurant offered gluten free bread and could even do gluten-free French Toast! The FireHall Pizza Co. offered gluten free pizza crust!

We had an amazing time at Blue Mountain Resort. Comfortable accommodations, amazing views, fun-filled activities and delicious food!  Our family will definitely be making this a traditional summer vacation spot.
