sloppy joe

There is snow on the ground, the temperatures are below zero Celsius all day long, everyday and I’m not even talking about windchill. Fall and Winter in Saskatchewan Canada are cold and there really is no reason for how cold it is! I am a warm person, which means I am cooking and baking everything and anything that is going to warm me from the inside out. Sloppy joes warm anyone from the inside out on these cold days.

We buy big buns for sloppy joes, kaiser buns are a great choice.

You could use any type of lean ground meat, we prefer beef for our sloppy joes.

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 onion – diced
  • 1 can of tomato soup
  • 1/4 cup vinegar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 3 cloves of garlic – minced

Sloppy Joes for Cold EveningsStart with your onion and garlic in a med-high deep sided pan.
Sloppy Joes for Cold EveningsAdd your ground beef (or other choice of ground meat), cook until brown.

Sloppy Joes for Cold EveningsAdd in the remaining ingredients, mix well, bring to a boil and reduce heat. Simmer for 25 minutes.

Sloppy Joes for Cold EveningsPile it on a bun, maybe sprinkle on a little Parmesan cheese, take a big bite and start warming up from the inside out.

My recipe is pretty versatile. Add more vegetables, add no vegetables it’s up to you. I love adding vegetables, for myself it means I can eat more, for my children because, hello, their getting more vegetables in them.

Vegetable add in possibilities:

  • celery – diced
  • peppers – chopped
  • carrots – shredded
  • mushrooms – chopped
